Meet Caren Phillips!

Caren was born in Harlingen, Texas, but grew up in Houston. She moved to Hammond and graduated from Hammond High School in 1995. She began working and had her first daughter Brittany (25). She met her husband, Robert, on a blind date in 2001. They were married in 2003, and have Preston (22), Kaylee (17) and Abigail (13). Caren is a member of Junior Auxiliary of Tangipahoa and fosters animals with Kat Vet. She has 8 cats, 1 dog (soon to be 2), an 8-year-old rabbit (usually they live to about 3 years old) and fish tanks in her home.

We want to thank Caren for spending some time with us and letting us get to know about her life and her love of the area.

Q: What is your favorite restaurant in the area, and what do you like to get there?
A: I love the Salad Station. I eat clean, and it is the best option for me. We really don't eat out much.

Q: What is your favorite childhood memory?
A: I have 38 cousins! But every summer from when I was 6 years old until 13 years old, I would spend it with one of my cousins and their family in Texas. It was the best.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be? And why?
A: I would love to explore all of Europe. We sent our kids to travel Europe, I would love to travel there also.

Q: What is your favorite movie? What is the first movie you remember seeing in a theater?
A: Sweet Home Alabama is my favorite movie, but the Grinch is my spirit animal! The first movie I remember seeing was Back to the Future with neighborhood friends. We had a $1 theater nearby.

Q: What advice would you give a group of people?
A: If the group is young people I would say, "Every day you can wake up and start anew. One decision does not dictate your future." If it is a group of older women, I would say, "Practice self-care." It took me a long time to figure that one out!

Q: What is something on your bucket list?
A: I have always said I would love to jump out of a plane with my husband.

Q: What is your favorite music or an artist/band that you would like to see?
A: I love all music, but country music has a special place in my heart. My husband and I are going to see Carrie Underwood in Vegas soon!

Q: What current or former business makes you the most nostalgic about the area?
A: The Strawberry Festival. It brings a sense of pride with our community. It has gotten so big. I have such good memories of it.

Q: If you could choose one person to go to lunch with, who is it and where would you go?
A: I would like to pick Anne Rice's brain. We would go to a nice restaurant that serves clean food!

Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique that you love about the area?
A: The sense of community. You can run into the same person, and still learn something new about them.

Q: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
A: Our kids will be grown and out of the house, and my husband and I will be traveling the world!

Q: What is something interesting that most people don’t know about you (even friends or family)?
A: I love true crime, horror movies, and horror stories! I can go to sleep listening to it and it doesn't bother me at all.

Q: What is a word or phrase that comes to mind when you think of the word “Home”?
A: Family

Q: If you could have a full-time staff member that is fully paid for, what would that be? (Chef, housekeeper, driver, coach, personal trainer, etc.)
A: A driver! My daughter is part of a competitive cheer group and we are always driving to Baton Rouge for practice or to competitions.

Q: If you had to choose one type of cuisine to eat for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?
A: Mexican food!

Q: What do you do when you are alone in your car?
A: Listen to true crime podcasts or books.

Q: What is the last gift you gave and received?
A: The last gift I gave was cheerleader survival kits to the cheer team for an upcoming competition. The last gift I received was around Christmas time from my husband- he gave me an ice machine that has the ice like Sonic. It is the gift I never knew I needed!

Q: What are you known for?
A: Fostering and always cracking a joke.

Q: What is your favorite 90s jam?
A: I listened to tons of R&B back then. It has to be Boys II Men - End of the Road.

Q: If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
A: To heal people. To heal people with grief and heal their minds.

Q: What are some of your hobbies?

A: A blanket and a photo of my family to keep me going.

Q: What is the funniest thing that happened to you recently?
A: A stray cat runs my house and me. He stands outside a window and screams when he is hungry, he will lay at the sensor by the garage to make sure I don't close it. I call him a stray, but we named him Mr. Whiskers and Kat Vet neutered him and he is vetted now.

Q: If you won the lottery, what would you purchase or spend money on?
A: More travel, homes in different areas for travel and somewhere to live that is secluded with peace and quiet.
