Meet Dr. Tyra Davis!
Dr. Tyra Davis was raised in New Iberia, and is the middle of three children. She attended Southern University in Baton Rouge for her undergraduate degree, and went to Tuskegee University for Veterinary Medicine. She graduated with her Doctorate in 2003, and began working at Hammond Animal Hospital. In 2010, she purchased the practice. She has one son, London (18), that just started his freshman year at Southern University. She currently resides in Baton Rouge.
We want to thank Dr. Davis for spending some time with us and letting us get to know about her life and her love of the area.
Q: What led you to your current career?
A: My family had a farm with a variety of animals, and we brought them to the vet, so I was familiar with veterinary medicine. I knew I wanted a career in the medical field, I went to a career fair in high school, and spoke to a recruiter from Southern. They asked me about my GPA and said it was possible for me to get a scholarship, so I pursued that! I did a preceptorship for a Summer at the University of Missouri with animals, and it was there I realized I wanted to be a veterinarian.
Q: What is your favorite restaurant in the area, and what do you like to get there?
A: In Hammond I love Chookies! I order the fried shrimp. I also really like Albasha. In Baton Rouge, I like Eliza's where I order the fried shrimp and crab cakes.
Q: What is your favorite childhood memory?
A: Spending time with my grandmother. I lived with her from 3 months until 5 years old, and I remember a lot of it. We would have birthday parties in her yard with huge cakes.
Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be? And why?
A: Curaçao! The buildings, food, jewelry stores! I'd also like to visit Greece.
Q: What is your favorite movie? What is the first movie you saw in the theater?
A: Coming to America, regardless of what time of day- if it is on TV, I must watch it! First movie in the theater was Annie, my Mom checked me out of school to see it!
Q: What advice would you give a group of people?
A: Social distance!
Q: What is something on your bucket list?
A: Visit the places I mentioned and to fly fish!
Q: What is your favorite music or an artist/band that you would like to see (dead or alive)?
A: I would have liked to see Michael Jackson perform. I also think Usher would put on a good show.
Q: What current or former business makes you the most nostalgic about the area?
A: Goula’s in Breaux Bridge had the best cracklins. We would stop there any time we would go to New Orleans. They closed about 5 years ago. Vitator’s had the best hot dogs and homemade chili that was really good. They closed about 2 years ago.
Q: If you could choose one person to go to lunch with that you’ve never met and is alive today, who is it and where would you go?
A: Beyoncé and Oprah! I would ask about their charitable projects, and I would take them to Eliza's. Or I would make red beans for them!
Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique that you love about the area?
A: I love how there is a close-knit community feel in Hammond. There is a vested interest in making this area great, and how SLU is one of the center of the community.
Q: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
A: Retired from the exam room, but still in the veterinary world. I would like to get more into academia. I'd like to teach and do research.
