Meet Holly Meaux Husser!

Holly was raised in Abbeville and is the oldest of 2 sisters. She graduated from Abbeville High School in 1999. She attended Lamar Institute of Technology in Beaumont, Texas to become a dental hygienist.

She married Alex in 2007, and had Sadie (12), Georgia (9), Jackson (7), and Veda (5). They also have a German Shepard named Turk. They lived in the Houston area for 10 years before moving back to Louisiana in 2019. It was then that she and her business partner, Veronica Leto, decided to start Adolesco Preparatory Academy in Hammond. She is the Head of School and is so happy God showed her this path.

We want to thank Holly for spending some time with us and letting us get to know about her life and her love of the area.

Q: What led you to your current career?
A: In Texas, I was working part time as a dental hygienist and staying home with my 4 kids. Our kids attended Logos Preparatory Academy, which is a university model school. Students attend school two days each week and manage independent study on alternate days at home under the supervision of a guardian. I loved it, and when we moved back to Louisiana, I searched for a university model school here. There was none in the state. I sent the kids to school, but I missed the sense of community and the flexibility I had with Logos. I spent time with Veronica at a parade, and the very next day, the thought came to me, I should start my own university model school here. I called Veronica and she was as excited and interested as me, so we started from there. I will never forget asking my husband, "Can I do this?" and he said "No, but God can!". I knew it was time to get to work. We went through training and informational sessions to learn about the university model from the administrative side that same year. We currently have 46 students and teach Pre-K 3-8th grade. We will be adding grades until 12th grade. Depending on age, students come 2 or 3 days a week and are taught by our instructors, then parents are given instructions on what to work on when the student is home. We focus on community, and how we are a group of like-minded people. The end goal is to help our students become disciples, and we use education as a tool to get them there. We have an informational meeting coming up on December 2nd where parents can learn more about us! It has been such a blessing for us.

Q: What is your favorite restaurant in the area, and what do you like to get there?
A: If the kids are deciding, we go to Our Mom's, and I order the boudin burger, extra sauce and mayo! I also like the boudin pizza from Nola Mia. Jacmel Inn is another favorite. My husband just recently planned a surprise 40th birthday for me there. So many people from all walks of life came. It was great!

Q: What is your favorite childhood memory?
A: My family had a camp on the Jean Marie Canal off of Vermilion Bay and we spent so much time swimming and jet skiing. It was so fun!

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be? And why?
A: Seychelles, which is a beautiful island near Africa. It is a joke in our family. Our Elf sent the kids a letter saying he was taking a sabbatical and moving there. Now we all want to go!

Q: What is your favorite movie? What is the first movie you remember seeing in a theater?
A: Dirty Dancing! I just love all the music in the movie. I remember seeing My Girl in the theater with my friends in the 6th or 7th grade.

Q: What advice would you give a group of people?
A: Be comfortable in your own skin. Live to your fullest potential and do it with confidence within your own skin.

Q: What is something on your bucket list?
A: My husband and I have discussed taking a motorcycle to Nashville to see Graceland. Also to hike and camp in the Grand Canyon with my family.

Q: What is your favorite music or an artist/band that you would like to see?
A: I listen to it all! From Christian music to Led Zeppelin. I love Percy Sledge and Otis Redding too! I would like to have seen Elvis or Led Zeppelin perform!

Q: What current or former business makes you the most nostalgic about the area?
A: Brady's! When we were still living in Texas and would come visit Alex's family, we would usually eat there.

Q: If you could choose one person to go to lunch with, who is it and where would you go?
A: Alex's grandparents. I have heard so much about them, and I would love to have met them.

Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique that you love about the area?
A: The small town feel. The hospitality in all of Louisiana. We missed that when we were in Texas.

Q: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
A: Still Head of School of Adolesco, but I would like for us to have a principal!

Q: What is something interesting that most people don’t know about you (even friends or family)?
A: I am afraid of heights, but I love roller coasters. I would totally skydive.

Q: What is a word or phrase that comes to mind when you think of the word “Home”?
A: Comfort. My Mom.

Q: If you could have a full-time staff member that is fully paid for, what would that be? (Chef, housekeeper, driver, coach, personal trainer, etc.)
A: A personal assistant to help me stay on task!

Q: If you had to choose one type of cuisine to eat for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?
A: Mexican. I miss cheap Tex-Mex in Texas.

Q: What do you do when you are alone in your car?
A: Sometimes silence. Sometimes audiobooks or podcasts. I am listening to Mama Bear Apologetics right now. It is so good.

Q: What is the last gift you gave and received?
A: Last gift I gave was a nightgown that says Rise and Shine to one of my students, Sofia, for her birthday. Last gift I received was the surprise birthday party from my husband. It was such a gift, people came in from all over to be there.

Q: What are you known for?
A: Being personable. Making people feel comfortable in their own skin.

Q: What is your favorite 90s jam?
A: Step by Step by New Kids on the Block! Such good memories.

Q: If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
A: To make everyone feel whole and loved.

Q: What are some of your hobbies?
A: I spend a lot of my free time working to make the school better. I also like to sew kids clothes, listen to books and tent camping. I love the outdoors.

Q: What is your most commonly used emoji?
A: The red heart!

Q: What is something you are most proud of?
A: My husband.

Q: What two items would you take with you if you shipwrecked on a deserted island where food and water were taken care of?
A: My toothbrush and Alex.

Q: What is the funniest thing that happened to you recently?
A: Due to Ida storm damage, the school has moved locations. On one of the first few days here, I was leaving for the day and making sure the buildings were secured. I set the alarm, locked the door, then I couldn't find my phone. I thought I had left it inside, so I went back in to look for it, then realized the alarm code was on my phone. So the alarm went off, and I was frantically looking for my phone. It went off for a good 15 minutes. It was wild! Come to find out my phone was in the car under a book!

Q: If you won the lottery, what would be the first 3 things you would purchase or spend money on?
A: I would have a school built, give some to First Baptist Church and The Vine Church as they have been so kind to let us use their facilities, and lastly I would pay off debt and enjoy the finer things in life daily!
