Meet Roslyn Varnado!

Roslyn grew up in Kentwood, Louisiana and is the oldest of two girls. She graduated from Sumner High School in 1999, and graduated from Southeastern Louisiana University in 2003 with a degree in Education and Communication. She began teaching and went back to school for her master’s in 2005. She also earned her +30 and Doctorate of Education in 2013 from Southeastern Louisiana University. She has taught in every district in Tangipahoa throughout her career. She is currently the Principal of Chesbrough Elementary School in Kentwood. Roslyn is also very active at her church, Spring Creek Baptist Church. She teaches Sunday school, leads the music, and is involved with the youth groups and women's missions.

She and her husband, Josh, married in 2005. They have two daughters, Leah (12) and Audrey (9). They also have 3 dogs (Princess, Angus and Zoey), chickens, and beehives.

We want to thank Roslyn for spending some time with us and letting us get to know about her life and her love of the area.

Q: What led you to your current career?
A: My parents were educators and I always enjoyed leadership. I knew I would be in a leadership position in a school. I love coming up with new, creative ideas and coming up with a plan to make it happen. My current position has been my favorite out of all the positions I have had.

Q: What is your favorite restaurant in the area, and what do you like to get there?
A: Every Friday we eat cheese pizza from Pizza Shack!

Q: What is your favorite childhood memory?
A: Our summer vacations. My parents were big believers of experiencing all the world has to offer. We went to Yellowstone, saw the Statue of Liberty, all kinds of places. I remember being in class, and seeing these places in textbooks, and it was great to have been there. My parents planned and saved up all year for these trips. My sister and I appreciate their efforts to take us.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be? And why?
A: I love the outdoors. I love the way nature makes me feel. I would like to go to every national park in the US.

Q: What is your favorite movie? What is the first movie you remember seeing in a theater?
A: I like The Day After Tomorrow. I like movies that make me think that I would push through and survive in these crazy situations. That I could be self-sufficient. The first movie I remember seeing in a theater was My Little Pony with my parents in McComb.

Q: What advice would you give a group of people?
A: Be kind. Give grace. Show love like Christ tells us to love others.

Q: What is something on your bucket list?
A: To have a full garden year-round that I could cook from. I love farming.

Q: What is your favorite music or an artist or band that you would like to see?
A: My favorite music is Christian music. I like NEEDTOBREATHE. I would like to see Lauren Daigle perform live.

Q: What current or former business makes you the most nostalgic about the area?
A: Main Street Kentwood. And businesses are starting to open again, which is great to see!

Q: If you could choose one person to go to lunch with that you’ve never met, who is it?
A: Pastor Tony Evans. I would love to chat about his sermons and spiritual life. We would go to a local restaurant, nothing too fancy.

Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique that you love about the area?
A: I love land. Growing up, my Dad had beef cows, and just being around open fields and pastures, I really like that.

Q: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
A: Right where I am today! Impacting the community and making a difference in people's lives.

Q: What is something interesting that most people don’t know about you (even friends or family)?
A: That I have beehives. I started beekeeping last spring, and have really enjoyed it.

Q: What is a word or phrase that comes to mind when you think of the word “Home”?
A: Love.

Q: If you could have a full-time staff member that is fully paid for, what would that be? (Chef, housekeeper, driver, coach, personal trainer, etc.)
A: For school, I would want a person to help students regulate their emotions and moods. Just someone to help them. For home, I want a planner of all aspects! Someone to plan what we are going to eat for dinner, fun activities and trips. Just plan it and I will make it happen.

Q: If you had to choose one type of cuisine to eat for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?
A: Pizza!

Q: What do you do when you are alone in your car?
A: Sing!

Q: What is the last gift you gave and received?
A: The last gift I gave was a donation to someone in the community. The last gift I received was flowers from my husband and daughters for Valentine's Day.

Q: What are you known for?
A: Laughter or always smiling and that I am Spontaneous.

Q: What is your favorite 90s jam?
A: MC Hammer- You Can't Touch This!

Q: If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
A: To be able to fly! I am afraid of heights, so that would help me get over that fear.

Q: What are some of your hobbies?
A: I like to read leadership and Christian books, listen to The Bible Project podcast, exercising, church, and spending time with family.
