Meet Trevor Shurtz!
Trevor has lived in the Ponchatoula/Hammond area since he was 8 years old. He has been married to his wife, Katie, for 14 years. They have two children together, Ian(10) and Tegan (4). Trevor went to Ponchatoula High School and Southeastern Louisiana University where he earned his degree in Computer Science. Trevor is the Lead Developer, Designer, and Project Manager at 3 Sided Media.
We want to thank Trevor for spending some time with us and letting us get to know about his life and his love of the area.
Q: What led you to your current career?
A: While attending SLU I was interning at a custom programming firm out of Baton Rouge. One of my direct clients there was 3 Sided Media. After my internship ended I was lucky to be brought on full-time with 3 Sided Media. The company was young and small, but we had a lot in common. Because of this I have been able to watch and help the company grow into what it is now and currently run the team of programmers, designers, and social media managers.
Q: What is your favorite restaurant in the area, and what do you like to get there?
A: Oh man, there's too many to list. I guess my current favorites are Tacos and Beer (best ceviche in the area) and Blackened Brew (the Blackened Brew burger is my all time favorite burger).
Q: How long have you lived or worked in the area?
A: I moved from Destrehan to Hammond when I was 8 years old and have lived between Hammond and Ponchatoula since then.
Q: What is your favorite childhood memory?
A: My parents started a twice yearly campout for our close family and friends on property we owned in Mississippi when I was very young. This camping, hiking, biking, hunting, and exploring with family and friends has overall defined my childhood and the best of memories.
Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be? And why?
A: That's a bit of a tough question, but I guess Sydney, Australia. My dad spent a few years there during high school and his closest friend, of whom I’m his namesake, lives there.
Q: What is your favorite movie? What is the first movie you saw in a theater?
A: Favorite movie is Aliens. I just love the overall visuals and design. The first movie I remember seeing in theater has to be The Little Mermaid.
Q: What advice would you give to a group of people?
A: Everyone says to follow your dreams. And while that is a great start, you also have to remember that it is on YOU to make that happen. It's going to take time, it's going to take hard work, and you're going to fail along the way.
Q: What is something on your bucket list?
A: Mainly just travel the world. Get out and experience how other people live, see great sights, and enjoy delicious food.
Q: What is your favorite music or an artist/band that you would like to see (dead or alive)?
A: Luckily I have seen the majority of my favorite bands currently around. My wife, friends, and I spent a lot of time at concerts and music festivals through high school and college. Past that I would have to say Bowie or Hendrix. Those are two I would have absolutely loved to see live.
Q: What current or former business makes you the most nostalgic about the area?
A: I guess I'd have to say the original Roller Kingdom. So many memories of great birthday parties and get-togethers through middle school took place there. That was the go-to birthday spot for a long time.
Q: If you could choose one person to go to lunch with that you’ve never met, who is it and where would you go?
A: Elon Musk. He just seems like no matter what it would end up being an interesting experience.
Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique that you love about the area?
A: The Joyce Wildlife Swampwalk on the edge of Ponchatoula is a favorite for my kids and myself. It's free, easy to get to, simple, yet always a good time. Take some time, take a walk, and enjoy the swamp.
Q: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
A: Hopefully traveling the world with my wife and kids. Enjoying life and not having much to worry about.
Q: What is something interesting that most people don’t know about you (even friends or family)?
A: That's a tough one. I feel like I'm a pretty open book when it comes to family and friends. I probably tend to talk almost too much about my hobbies and interests.
Q: What is a word or phrase that comes to mind when you think of the word “Home”?
A: Hectic yet comfortable.
Q: If you could have a full-time staff member that is fully paid for, what would that be? (Chef, housekeeper, driver, coach, personal trainer, etc.)
A: Housekeeper, definitely. That is one of the only "tasks" in life that takes constant effort but does not bring me joy. I love cooking, enjoy a nice afternoon drive, etc., but I don't have the same feelings about house cleaning!
Q: Most commonly used emoji?
A: Definitely the sideways, crying laughing guy.
Q: If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
A: Hmm, I guess flight. Seems like the most practical in every day life while also the most fun.
Q: Do you have a hobby?
A: Many would say I have too many hobbies! But the one currently taking the most of my attention has been 3D printing and design. Over the past few years, I have been working with multiple 3D printing manufacturers around the world helping to design and test their products. It has been nice to be able to put this time and effort into products bringing joy to others across the world, while at the same time not having to look at it as a job.
Q: What is something you are most proud of?
A: Cliché I guess, but my kids. They bring me joy everyday seeing them grow and watching them become their own people.
