Meet Jamie Holley!
Jamie grew up in St. Bernard and is the oldest child of three. She has two younger brothers. She graduated from Cabrini High School in 1996, then attended University of Louisiana at Lafayette. She then transferred to Southeastern Louisiana University before attending John Jay Beauty College in 2001. She met her husband, Michael, in 2004 at The Bulldog. They randomly sat next to each other at the bar and started talking. They moved to Ponchatoula after Hurricane Katrina destroyed their home, then got married in 2007. Together they have Addison (10), who attends St. Joseph Catholic School, where Jamie is the chairwoman of their fair for the second year. She also has volunteered for the last seven years on the Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival Board. They have three dogs, Lou, Lucy and Sadie. Jamie is also the proud owner of Southern Roots Style & Color Company in Ponchatoula.
We want to thank Jamie for spending some time with us and letting us get to know about her life and her love of the area.
Q: What led you to your current career?
A: After I went to beauty school, I worked for Neill Corp for 11 years. I worked at Paris Parker in Uptown New Orleans. I left in 2011, and worked at a few salons before Michael encouraged me to open my own salon about two years ago. I am so happy he did. I love my job and my clients.
Q: What is your favorite restaurant in the area, and what do you like to get there?
A: This is a hard one! La Caretta for the queso and chips and Mariners's Inn for their cheese fries and chicken wings.
Q: What is your favorite childhood memory?
A: I had a great childhood, really. I have a great family and I always had fun.
Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be? And why?
A: Greece! I have been to Europe and Spain, but I want to go there before I die.
Q: What is your favorite movie?
A: Steel Magnolias- I can recite the movie!
Q: Do you have a favorite book? What do you love about it?
A: Night Jasmine by Mary Lou Widmer. It is a fictional story set in New Orleans by a local writer. I have read it probably ten times!
Q: What advice would you give a group of people?
A: I always tell Addison and her friends: be kind. Not all have the same life that you do. You wouldn't want others to judge.
Q: What is something on your bucket list?
A: Go to Greece and Italy with Michael.
Q: What is your favorite music or an artist or band that you would like to see?
A: I love all 90's music. I would love to see Nirvana and 2Pac perform, separately.
Q: What current or former business makes you the most nostalgic about the area?
A: My grandparents lived here, so as a child I have memories of visiting them here. My grandmother worked at Elmer's and I remember she would bring us huge bags of goodies from there.
Q: If you could choose one person to go to lunch with that you’ve never met, who is it?
A: Vidal Sassoon. He brought the hair industry into the 21st century. He made being a hairstylist cool by taking the negativity out of it.
Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique that you love about the area?
A: That there is still the small town feel even with growth. We picked Ponchatoula because it reminded me of home.
Q: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
A: Still behind the chair. Maybe traveling more.
Q: What is something interesting that most people don’t know about you (even friends or family)?
A: That I am deathly afraid of birds of all kinds. I saw Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds when I was young. I immediately put my sunglasses or glasses on to protect my eyes.
Q: What is a word or phrase that comes to mind when you think of the word “Home”?
A: Michael.
Q: If you could have a full-time staff member that is fully paid for, what would that be? (Chef, housekeeper, driver, coach, personal trainer, etc.)
A: A housekeeper who also does laundry!
Q: If you had to choose one type of cuisine to eat for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?
A: Mexican food!
Q: What do you do when you are alone in your car?
A: Have a concert or talk on the phone.
Q: What is the last gift you gave and received?
A: The last gift I gave was a surprise 70th birthday party for my dad. The last gift I received was a bread machine from Michael and Addison.
Q: What are you known for?
A: Being Addison's mom. Not being shy. Being welcoming and warm to people.
Q: What is your favorite 90s jam?
A: Anything by Janet Jackson.
Q: What are some of your hobbies?
A: I like to cook and spend time with my family. Including my nieces and nephews.
Q: What is your most commonly used emoji?
A: Facepalm
Q: What is something you are most proud of?
A: Addison.
Q: What two items would you take with you if you shipwrecked on a deserted island where food and water were taken care of?
A: Michael, Addison and my dogs!
Q: If you won the lottery, what would you purchase or spend money on?
A: I would pay off the house, buy a building for the salon and travel to Greece!
Q: What do you want your legacy to be?
A: That I loved life and people!
