Meet Shea Verbois!

Shea was raised in Pumpkin Center and has one younger sister. He studied at St. Thomas Aquinas High School where he played soccer all 4 years. He was on the winning state championship team his senior year. He graduated in 2008, then he was awarded a soccer scholarship to attend a school in southwest Mississippi, where he attended for a year. He decided to enroll to the Aveda Institute where he learned how to be a hairstylist in 2010. He worked at a variety of salons in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Hammond, Mandeville (even opening up his own salon at one point) before making his home at The Groomed Studio in Ponchatoula in January 2022.

Shea is a member of Healing Place Church in Baton Rouge, and has one dog, a miniature Australian shepherd named Louis (after Louis Vuitton).

We want to thank Shea for spending some time with us and letting us get to know about his life and his love of the area.

Q: What led you to your current career?
A: I had a mentor growing up who took me along to hair shows, and he asked me if I had ever considered this industry. I had thought about doing hair, but I learned a lot from him.

Q: What is your favorite restaurant in the area, and what do you like to get there?
A: I like The Steakhouse! I order the filet with lump crab meat. I also really like Ruffino's in Baton Rouge. Everything there is so good, but I like their Veal Michael.

Q: What is your favorite childhood memory?
A: Playing soccer. I played recreactional ball from 4 years old until I was 18 years old. When I was 11, I played on a traveling team. Then, in high school, we won the state championship. It was such a large part of my childhood.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be? And why?
A: London. I would love to catch some soccer matches. I am also a huge Harry Potter fan, I would love to be in the areas that parts of the books were written about.

Q: What is your favorite movie? What is the first movie you remember seeing in a theater?
A: I love the second Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows movie. Also Goodfellas and Home Alone and Dumb and Dumber. The first movie I remember seeing in the theater was the Power Rangers movie in the theater in the mall for my birthday party.

Q: What advice would you give a group of people?
A: Stay true to yourself.

Q: What is something on your bucket list?
A: Skydiving, and traveling to Africa and South America.

Q: What is your favorite music or an artist or band that you would like to see?
A: I like hip hop and classic rock. I would love to see Kayne West, Elton John and J. Cole perform.

Q: What current or former business makes you the most nostalgic about the area?
A: Ledbetter's Bar in Ponchatoula. It is the same building of The Groomed Studio now. I would shoot pool in the same area that I work in now.

Q: If you could choose one person to go to lunch with that you’ve never met, who is it?
A: Emma Watson for a date! I would try to wine and dine her. I would take her to one thirteen restaurant, and I would try to get a private space so we wouldn't be interrupted.

Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique that you love about the area?
A: The community. I love the historic parts of Ponchatoula and Hammond.

Q: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
A: Settled down with a family. Owning my own clothing and product line.

Q: What is something interesting that most people don’t know about you (even friends or family)?
A: I am left handed. I struggled at Aveda in the beginning because I was using right handed scissors, and didn't know there was a difference. One of the instructors realized, and helped me out!

Q: What is a word or phrase that comes to mind when you think of the word “Home”?
A: Love.

Q: If you could have a full-time staff member that is fully paid for, what would that be? (Chef, housekeeper, driver, coach, personal trainer, etc.)
A: Someone to handle all my finances. Paying my bills, setting up a budget, do my investing, all to make sure I was set up for the future.

Q: If you had to choose one type of cuisine to eat for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?
A: A carnivore diet. All meat. And I like sushi, also.

Q: What do you do when you are alone in your car?
A: Sing.

Q: What is the last gift you gave and received?
A: The last gift I gave was an orchid plant to a friend, just because. The last gift I received was a pair of trimmers from another stylist, Jah.

Q: What is your favorite 90s jam?
A: There are so many! Mariah Carey, Boyz II Men! But, I will have to say the best song is Will You Be There by Michael Jackson from the Free Willie movie!

Q: If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
A: I would want to read minds. I would want to turn it off and on, and use it for good. I would want to help solve problems, not to manipulate situations.

Q: What are some of your hobbies?
A: I like to wakeboard and play in a competive Paint Ball team, The Nola Hurricanes.

Q: What is your most commonly used emoji?
A: The prayer hands. I use it for everything.
