Meet Tyroneca Griffin!
Tyroneca was raised in Baton Rouge and has an older brother and younger sister. She graduated from Baton Rouge Magnet High School in 2005, then moved to Hammond to attend Southeastern Louisiana University. She started in nursing, but graduated in Accounting in 2011. She worked in an accounting firm for a year before she followed her calling to become a teacher in 2013. She has taught at Hammond Eastside Magnet School for 8 years starting as a substitute teacher. She has also coached track, cross country and girls basketball.
Ty is also a published author and editor. Her book, The Dear Young Woman: His Purpose Is Greater Than Your Plan can be purchased on her website.
She met her husband, Chauncey, while attending SLU and they got married in 2010. Together, they have 4 children: Amaiyah (15), Alaiyah (11), Ayden (8) and Ashton (3). They also have 3 dogs, many chickens in their chicken mansion and a lizard.
Q: What led you to your current career?
A: I always wanted to be a teacher. I found a paper in storage from when I was young where I had written that I wanted to "change the world". I think teaching does that. When I graduated, I worked for an accounting firm and I was always excited about organizing information for others. I knew it was time to follow my calling and teach. I have been at Hammond Eastside for the duration of my teaching career, and it is where I am supposed to be.
Q: What is your favorite restaurant in the area, and what do you like to get there?
A: We have been going on brunch dates to Yellow Bird Cafe on the weekends lately. It is good!
Q: What is your favorite childhood memory?
A: Going to garage sales with my Mom on Saturdays. We would look for antiques and go to the flea market in Praireville.
Q: What is your favorite movie? What is the first movie you remember seeing in a theater?
A: It is a tie between Home Alone and Mrs. Doubtfire. I think the first movie I saw in the theater was a Sesame Street movie with my Mom and sister.
Q: What advice would you give a group of people?
A: Be yourself. No matter what that looks like. Be authentic.
Q: What is something on your bucket list?
A: Learn how to swim!
Q: What is your favorite music or an artist or band that you would like to see?
A: I listen to everything! From rap to gospel and jazz. I have music playing in my classroom when the students arrive, and they all like it. I would like to see Frankie Beverly And Maze perform.
Q: What current or former business makes you the most nostalgic about the area?
A: Home Depot. I would go there with my grandpa all the time when I was a kid. It has a distinct smell!
Q: If you could choose one person to go to lunch with that you’ve never met, who is it?
A: I'd have lunch with my future self! We would go to Neyow's in New Orleans and get some good food! I'd tell her that she's doing an amazing job, and she has NOTHING to worry about, GOD has it all handled!
Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique that you love about the area?
A: The sense of community. I feel like I am from here, even though I am not. They have embraced me, and I feel like many people know me because I have taught them or their kids!
Q: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
A: A thriving author and editor. Maybe still teaching. I would like to teach others how to teach.
Q: What is something interesting that most people don’t know about you (even friends or family)?
A: That I have stage fright!
Q: What is a word or phrase that comes to mind when you think of the word “Home”?
A: Safety.
Q: If you could have a full-time staff member that is fully paid for, what would that be? (Chef, housekeeper, driver, coach, personal trainer, etc.)
A: Someone to do our laundry. I like to cook and clean, but I do not like laundry.
Q: If you had to choose one type of cuisine to eat for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?
A: Louisiana/Cajun food!
Q: What do you do when you are alone in your car?
A: Sing, rap, dance! I have the music up so loud!
Q: What is the last gift you gave and received?
A: The last gift I gave was a portable massage gun to Chauncey for teacher appreciation week. The last gift I received was at our athletic banquet. An athlete is moving to Texas and she gave me a basket of goodies. I also received an orchid and gift card from another student. I was so touched!
Q: What are you known for?
A: Coaching or teaching. Soon to be authoring.
Q: What is your favorite 90s jam?
A: This is how we do it by Montell Jordan!
Q: If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
A: Lighting speed for efficiency.
Q: What are some of your hobbies?
A: Gardening! My husband and I love it. We have a massive vegetable garden. I like to see what I can grow from a seed. I also like to write, read, and watch movies. I love to spend time with my family.
Q: What is your most commonly used emoji?
A: The purple heart. Purple because it is my favorite color.
Q: What is something you are most proud of?
A: My family unit as a whole. Also how I am breaking out of my shell. For my growth. I am proud of my survival after tremendous losses. I am also so proud of my sister.
Q: What three items would you take with you if you shipwrecked on a deserted island where food and water were taken care of?
A: A college ruled notebook, pack of fine point colorful pens and a good book!
Q: What is the funniest thing that happened to you recently?
A: I was leaving my house for the last day of school and a horsefly was in my car. It flew straight to my face and my first reaction was to open the car door to get it out...while I was driving. It is funny now!
Q: If you won the lottery, what would you purchase or spend money on?
A: Buy a farm, be debt-free and have money for each of my children for what they needed - either school or opening a business.
