Meet Shy Henry!

Shy was born and raised in Hammond. She is the oldest of 2, and has a brother. She graduated from Hammond High School in 2011, then went to University of Louisiana of Lafayette. She graduated with her bachelors from Southeastern Louisiana University in Criminal Justice. She is now in school for her Masters for counseling. She volunteers with various organizations helping at-risk youth in the community. She is currently assisting 5 children. She is married to her high school sweetheart, Jason. They met at their high school jobs, Winn Dixie. She was the cashier and he was the stocker! Together they have Jayce (8) and Sanaii (1).

We want to thank Shy for spending some time with us and letting us get to know about her life and her love of the area.

Q: What led you to your current career?
A: I am a Travel Specialist at Tangi Tourism. I started working for parish government, and was told tourism fit my personality better. So, I hopped over and have been there for 5 great years.

Q: What is your favorite restaurant in the area, and what do you like to get there?
A: Son of a Biscuit is a new favorite! Sometimes you have to give new restaurants some time for their food and service to work themselves out. I have been there a couple of times, and it has all been great! I order the mac and cheese and the wings. Both are great.

Q: What is your favorite childhood memory?
A: My Aunt would host a fish fry every Friday at her house. I would play with cousins and listen to blues music. It was always a blast. She passed when I was in the 7th grade, so unfortunately it stopped.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be? And why?
A: Africa. I recently did my ancestry, and I would love to see where my ancestors came from!

Q: What is your favorite movie? What is the first movie you saw in the theater?
A: The Color Purple is my favorite movie. My first movie in the theater was when I was in the 4th grade, I saw one of the Terminator movies with my Mom and brother.

Q: What advice would you give a group of people?
A: God supersedes every challenge. I love the Bible verses that discuss hardships, then says, but God. God is there.

Q: What is something on your bucket list?
A: Skydiving! It represents letting go, it has to be such a great feeling!

Q: What is your favorite music or an artist/band that you would like to see?
A: J. Cole is my favorite rapper. For the messages he speaks about in his music. There is always a hidden message.

Q: What current or former business makes you the most nostalgic about the area?
A: Catfish Charlie’s! I remember feeding the ducks biscuits from the table.

Q: If you could choose someone to go to lunch with (dead or alive), who is it and where would you go?
A: Mayor Latoya Cantrell, I'd like to get to know her. I would take her to Cate Street because it has such a large menu. I also like the historic aspect of the restaurant.

Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique that you love about the area?
A: The sense of pride and togetherness. I like how everyone works together to show their pride.

Q: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
A: Finished with my Masters and Doctorate degrees and opening up my private practice.

Q: What is something interesting that most people don’t know about you (even friends or family)?
A: That I am an introvert! When I get home I shut it off and recharge.

Q: What is a word or phrase that comes to mind when you think of the word “Home”?
A: Family.

Q: If you could have a full-time staff member that is fully paid for, what would that be? (Chef, housekeeper, driver, coach, personal trainer, etc.)
A: Definitely a housekeeper!

Q: If you had to choose one type of cuisine to eat for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?
A: Chicken wings! They are my favorite.

Q: What do you do when you are alone in your car?
A: I sit in silence and in the quiet. I pray and reflect on the day.

Q: What is the last gift you gave and received?
A: Last gift I gave was Saints tickets to my husband for his birthday. He and his friend are going to have a great time. Last gift I received was money for lunch from my friend, Jovan.

Q: What are you known for?
A: Being loud!

Q: What is your favorite 90’s jam?
A: Xscape, Just Kickin' It!

Q: Most commonly used emoji?
A: The blue heart. My Uncle was a Sigma and their colors are blue and white. He recently passed, so I do it as a tribute to him.

Q: If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
A: To go back in time and bring someone with me to help them resolve something in their past. Or to let them spend time with someone in their past.

Q: What are some of your hobbies?
A: Adulting, taking care of my kids! I do not have hobbies right now!

Q: What is something you are most proud of?
A: My growth. I have matured a lot. I am also proud of the sense of direction I have.

Q: What two items would you take with you if you were shipwrecked on a deserted island where food and water were taken care of?
A: Assuming my family is there, I would bring my Bible and a TV to catch up on shows.

Q: What is the funniest thing that has happened to you recently?
A: My daughter put on my fake eyelashes, and it scared me!

Q: If you won the lottery, what would be the first 3 things you would purchase or spend money on?
A: 1. Paying tithes, 10% to church or to nonprofits to kids in need. 2. Set up generational wealth for my kids. 3. Buy my own island in the Maldives for my immediate family. My extended family could visit!
